Power Limited Technician Exam Prep Class
Student Furnished Items

The following student furnished items are required for the PLT Exam Prep Class:

 1. The 2011 National Electrical Code (NEC) book  [soft white cover]

 2. Highlighters (at least two different colors)

 3. Notebook, notepad or plenty of note paper

 4. Pens and pencils

 5. A basic, four-function calculator (add - subtract - multiply - divide).

Minnesota will adopted the 2011 NEC on or shortly after July 1, 2011. All electrical examinations after that date will be based on the 2011 NEC.

Starting with the July class, the exam prep class will be based on the 2011 National Electrical Code. All materials used in the class will reference the 2011 edition of the NEC. The class does cover the transition to the new edition because the 2008 and earlier editions are no longer relevent.

It is recommended that participants purchase and use the basic NEC book for this class. The list price for the basic NEC book is about $85.00 for the glue-bound, soft-cover version. There is also a spiral bound version and a loose-leaf version. Both are more expensive. These books can be found at bookstores, some technical college bookstores, and online at www.mikeholt.com, at Amazon or similar locations. They can also be purchased at some elctrical supply houses. On-line sources often offer significant discounts.

It is strongly recommended that participants NOT use the NEC Handbook. It is larger, more expensive, and the page numbering does not match the basic code book page numbering. This could be a somewhat of a challenge in class and possibly when taking the PLT examination.

Some taking this exam prep class have little or no experience with the NEC or the electrical wiring and systems that it addresses. If that is the case, the Low Voltage Guy recommends Mike Holt's book "Understanding the NEC Requirements for Limited Energy and Communication Systems" It is available from Mike Holt Enterprises at www.mikeholt.com. Click on products for 2008.

A copy of "Understanding the NEC Requirements for Limited Energy and Communication Systems" will be available in class for  perusal by attendees.
